Ultimate Member is one of the most popular ways to add user profiles, registration and member directories to WordPress, with more than 200,000 active installs. It isn’t the right fit for every site, though. If it feels heavier than you need, or the plans cost more than the two or three features you actually use, these Ultimate Member alternatives are worth a look. We make one of them, WP User Manager, so we’ll be upfront about where each plugin, Ultimate Member included, is the better choice.
Prices and install counts below were checked in October 2026.
Why look for an Ultimate Member alternative?

Ultimate Member does a lot well. The free version is generous: registration and login forms, profiles, member directories, content restriction and an account page, plus conditional form fields that most plugins charge for. It has a large community and a long list of extensions.
The reasons people move away are usually one of these:
- Cost for a small feature set. The paid plans are $276 a year for one site (Standard) or $348 a year for two sites (Pro, which adds Stripe, Zapier and the Ultimate Member theme). That’s good value if you use most of the 21 extensions, and a lot if you need one or two.
- Weight. Ultimate Member loads a broad feature set. On a lean site, or shared hosting, a smaller plugin can be easier to live with.
- A different job. If what you really need is paid memberships, online courses or a social network, a plugin built for that job will serve you better.

1. WP User Manager
WP User Manager (WPUM) covers the same core ground as Ultimate Member: frontend registration and login, user profiles, an account page, member directories and content restriction. We built it to stay small: the core plugin does those jobs, and the addons only load if you install them.

What’s in the free plugin:
- Registration, login, password recovery and account forms, each with its own shortcode (for example the login form shortcode).
- A fields editor under Users > Custom Fields for text, email, URL, number, dropdown, radio, checkbox and multiselect fields.
- Profiles with avatars and cover images.
- Member directories under Users > Directories, with a search form and sorting. Our member directory tutorial walks through one.
- Content restriction shortcodes for logged-in users, logged-out users, specific roles and specific users, explained in content restriction shortcodes.
- A roles and capabilities editor under Users > Roles.
- Editable email templates under Users > Emails.
- Lock Access to wp-login.php, which sends visitors to your custom login page instead.
- Stripe payments at registration through Stripe Connect, with a 2% per-transaction fee on top of Stripe’s own. The paid Stripe Pro addon removes that fee. Setup is in using Stripe to collect payment at registration.
- Elementor widgets and block editor blocks.

What’s paid: advanced field types (file, date, repeater, video and more) and conditional logic come with the Custom Fields addon. Multiple and multi-step registration forms, groups, WooCommerce and Stripe Pro are in the higher plans.

Pricing: Starter is $149 a year for one site, Plus is $199 for five sites, Pro is $299 for ten sites and Agency is $599 for 25 sites. There are lifetime versions of each plan too, from $449. See the pricing page for which addons each plan includes.
Where Ultimate Member is stronger: conditional form fields are free in Ultimate Member and paid in WPUM. Ultimate Member also has more social extensions (followers, bookmarks, private messages and user reviews) that we don’t offer, and a much bigger community. If those matter to you, stay with Ultimate Member.
We wrote a longer, head-to-head WP User Manager vs Ultimate Member comparison if you’re choosing between the two.
2. UsersWP

UsersWP is the closest like-for-like alternative to Ultimate Member and to us: frontend login and registration, profiles and member directories, with around 20,000 active installs.
Its pricing is simple: one membership covers every add-on on unlimited sites, at $199 a year or $99 for four months. If you run many sites and want every add-on, that’s hard to beat. If you only need profiles and directories on one site, the free plugins (ours included) may be all you need.
3. ProfilePress

ProfilePress started as a user avatar plugin and grew into a profile and membership plugin with about 100,000 active installs. The big difference from Ultimate Member is that it sells memberships itself: membership plans, checkout and payment gateways are part of the plugin, alongside registration forms, profiles and directories.
Choose it if you want profiles and paid memberships in one plugin. If you mainly need profiles, registration and directories, it’s more than you need.
4. BuddyPress

BuddyPress is free and open source, and it’s the one to pick if you’re building a social network rather than a membership site. It adds activity streams, friend connections, groups and private messaging, with about 90,000 active installs.
It doesn’t handle payments, content restriction or detailed registration forms on its own, so most BuddyPress sites add other plugins for those. Our guide to building a community website covers how the pieces fit together.
5. Paid Memberships Pro

If the reason you’re leaving Ultimate Member is that you want to sell access, Paid Memberships Pro is built for exactly that: membership levels, recurring payments and protected content. The free plugin includes 25 add-ons. The Standard plan is $499 a year for one site and unlocks 54 premium add-ons and support.
It’s a payments-first plugin. User profiles and member directories are add-ons rather than the core of the product, so if those are central to your site, a profile plugin will feel more natural.
6. MemberPress

MemberPress is a premium-only membership plugin focused on selling memberships and courses: content protection, payments, a course builder and, on higher plans, community and coaching features. Plans start at $399 a year, with a first-year discount at the time of writing.
It’s the most expensive option here and the furthest from what Ultimate Member does. Pick it if your site is a business selling access and courses, not a place for members to have profiles and find each other. Our roundup of WordPress membership plugins compares it with other payment-focused options.
How to choose
Start from the job your site has to do:
- Profiles, registration and a member directory: WP User Manager or UsersWP. Both are free to start, and the paid plans cost less than Ultimate Member’s.
- A social network with activity feeds and messaging: BuddyPress, or stay with Ultimate Member and its social extensions.
- Selling memberships: ProfilePress if you also want profiles, Paid Memberships Pro or MemberPress if payments come first.
Switching later is possible but not free of work. User accounts are standard WordPress users, so they come with you, but forms, custom fields and directories have to be set up again in the new plugin.
Try WP User Manager
If WP User Manager sounds like the right fit, the core plugin is free on wordpress.org. Install it, add a registration form and a directory, and see how it feels on your site. When you need conditional fields, multiple registration forms or Stripe without the fee, the pricing page shows which plan includes them, and every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
